Animal Tissues

Epithelial Tissue

Simple Squamous Epithelium

Flattened (squamous) cells in a single layer (simple).

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

Cells with rounded nuclei in a single layer.

Simple Columnar Epithelium

Cells with elongate in a single layer.

Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium

Cells with rounded nuclei in a single layer but crowded together giving a stratified appearance.

Note the ciliated layer (top) and basement membrane (bottom).

Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Flattened cells in multiple layers.

Connective Tissue

Elastic Connective Tissue

Thick elastic fibers, with fibroblasts (dark nuclei) between the fibers.

White Fibrous Connective Tissue

Dense layers of flexible fibers with fibroblasts between the fibers.

Hyaline Cartilage

Chondrocytes (arrow) embedded in hyaline cartilage.

Elastic Cartilage

Cartilage with elastic fibers (blue arrows) and chondrocytes (black arrow) in lacunae (red arrow)

Bone

Haversian canals (black arrow) surrounded by lamellae (red arrow).

Note the lacunae (blue arrows) between the lamellae.

Blood (mammalian)

Red blood cells and 2 types of leukocyte (white blood cells).

Note the neutrophils (black arrow) and monocyte (red arrow).

Blood (amphibian)

Nucleated red blood cells.

Adipose Tissue

Fat-storing adipocytes (black arrows)

Muscle Tissue

Skeletal Muscle

Striated cells with multiple nuclei

Cariac Muscle

Striated cells joined by intercalated discs (black arrows).

Smooth Muscle

Spindle-shaped contractile cells with a single nucleus.

Nervous Tissue

Motor Neuron

Note nucleus (black arrow) and dentrites (red arrow) of the motor neurons.
