Jacks from San Salvador

Family Carangidae

Silvery, large-eyed, deep-bodied fishes. Deeply forked tail with narrow base, and dorsl fin in 2 parts. Spawn at sea, and school inshore as adults.

Bar Jack (Caranx ruber): blue and black bar running down back and onto lower portion of tail fin.

Horse-eye Jack (Caranx latus): yellow tail fin, clear pectoral fin and large eye (yellow jack has a smaller eye).

Yellow Jack (Caranx bartholomaei): yellow tail fin and small eye (horse-eye jack has a much larger eye).

Almaco Jack (Seriola rivoliana): dark band running across eye from mouth to anterior of dorsal fin and long foredorsal fin.

Palometa (Trachinotus goodei): Silvery body. Dorsal and anal fins elongated. Four black bars on side.
